What's wrong with the internet?

But what about privacy?
Are you happy for corporations or governments to track your movements online?

For my safety and the people around me's safety I would not necessarily condemn secure and trusted governmental movements to monitor my movements online, providing my data and information is kept secure and only for security reasons and is not misusing it.

Summarise the article

The magazine article seems like its coming from someone who is very concerned about who is recording and monitoring your movements online. it gives an example of school issued laptops invading the children's privacy by watching them through a webcam, the article is linking the very disturbing incident to governmental surveillance, by putting out scenarios and rhetorical questions. It also provides information about how personal data is kept secure on social networking sites, it also mentions the cost of data mining such as finding out IQ, gender, race, political views etc.

Show your critical autonomy: what is your opinion on this debate? Are you bothered by people tracking your online movements? Is it a small price to pay for the benefits of a life online?

My opinion on the debate is that surveillance should only be kept by trusted sources, this may include robotic devices. I agree that everyone has a right to privacy and should not be spied on, however in the same instance, if there are potential threats to the community or society than some precautions and measurements need to be taken. I am not particularity bothered about being tracked online and sacrificing some privacy for the purpose of my security and the people around me.

internet

communication-
people talk over social media more and this decreases the number if interactions with real human beings and also negatively affects their confidence in real life and boosts their confidence behind the screen. Also people spend more time using the internet to speak to people they dont even know and less to their own family and friends which could deteriorate relationships.

nature of information-
we now have a wider access to information because of the easy access to the internet, this information creates a glovbal village as people worldwide can input, output, process and store data and information from people far and near, without having to travel etc. however some of the information on the internet may not be accurate due to the fact that knowledgeable people and also the notorious have access to the information and may disturb the quality of information such as the accuracy, relevance and how up to date the information is.

privacy/copy rights-
privacy has improved in certain ways throughout the year as rules and regulations have been placed in order to prevent unauthorised access to certain personal information, these may include the data protection act, the copy rights and patent act 1988. people now depend on technology to keep personal information secure not realising that there are third party users on the web ie cloud computing ect. Furthermore, everyone with a smart phone or technology advanced to a certain level will have their data and info recorded as big data, this allows shops etc to learn and record items frequently purchased.

Community-
online chartrooms etc allow the community to become more closely knit and allows them to develop ideas and distribute them to come up with better combinations of suggestions and objectives. however this is only online and people tend to forget to improve their local community as they spend alot their effort and time online.

online safety-
theses have developed over the years and become a more advanced but also have downfalls to them as the online safety rules, regulations and laws may be breached easily by fraud, viruses in emails etc.

business-
the internet provides huge advantages to businesses as they can easily promote and advertise ether items/ products, campaign etc online, this is and effective way as the audience on the internet are larger and easy to get hold of. Additionally, you can find out comparative sales etc to better your own campaign and broaden your audiences. However other companies may steal your ides as it is open to everyone, despite this there are still regulations to protect your data such as the copy rights and patents act 1988.

culture-
the sharing of information in certain ways allows others to learn about other cultures and how they use the internet and for what. this allows the distribution of knowledge and information.
